In-Person Courses Vs. Online Only

Online courses have had explosive growth from 2011 to 2021 and there is no indication of stopping. The Covid pandemic sped up the increased rate of online courses and people are still flocking to them in record numbers. But what are the tangible benefits of in-person courses for certain subjects and skills.

From 2011 to 2021, the number of e-learners reached by massive open online courses increased from 300,000 to 220 million. The circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 rapidly accelerated that growth by an additional 92%!

So what are the advantages of an in-person course over online only?

Interpersonal Interaction

In-person courses allow for direct interaction with instructors and classmates, which can enhance learning and growing advanced social skills. Students can directly ask questions in the moment, discuss innovative ideas, and receive helpful feedback in real-time, which may not be as easy to do in an online learning environment.

Collaborative Learning

Group activities and discussions can be easier to facilitate in person, which can help develop teamwork and collaboration skills. Students can also form small learning groups and network with other classmates, which may not be as easy to do in an online environment.

Hands-on Learning

Certain subjects, such as studio arts, creative skills, sciences, and performing arts, may greatly require hands-on experience, that cannot be replicated in the online environment. In-person courses may provide access to hands-on skills, demos, gear/equipment, and special resources that are essential for this type of learning.

While recognizing the power of in-person learning there are some disadvantages of in-person live courses.

Limited Flexibility

In-person courses require students to attend physical classes at a specific date/time and geographic location, which can be inconvenient for those with busy schedules or who live far away. Online courses can offer more flexibility and can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. They are ideal for learning add-on skills and great for writing assignments.

Online courses may be more cost-effective as there are no transportation costs and related expenses. Online courses can require students to take more responsibility for their own learning, which can help develop self-discipline and time-management skills. Students can work through the course material at their own pace, review online content as needed, and engage in self-directed activities. It requires will-power, accountability and self-restraint from distractions.
